Motorola's new damn hot ROKR E6 has been in the news ever since its FCC approval and it seems that this is one phone you just can't do without. Much to the delight of all the Motorola fans, this Linux based beauty is now finally launched in China, after rather an excruciatingly long wait. But folks, lets keep our fingers crossed until its made official for the U.S!

The ROKR E6 is a tri-band supporting 900/1800/1900Mhz bands, much to the delight of Moto fans in U.S. But, it makes the ROKR E6 of limited use here in the US as long as you stay within the T-Mobile network. The phone includes host of multimedia goodies, a 2 megapixel camera, a QR code (barcode) scanner, business card reader, and document viewer for PDF and most importantly MS Office applications.

Apart from that you can enjoy the iTunes via Real player which also suggests that it supports MP3, MPEG4, AAC+, WAV, and RealAudio formats. Additional features include Bluetooth stereo audio (A2DP), integrated FM radio, dedicated music controls along the side, a USB 2.0 and a 3.5mm headphone jack. According to sources it is retailing in China for 4,280 chinese yuan, which is approximately around 540$ USD.

Motorola SCPL

Motorola mobile devices overlord Ron Garriques unveiled the first of the company's new SCPL (that's "scalpel") line of phones today, the successors to the RAZR platform. The MOTOFONE is targeted at "high-growth markets," which is Motospeak for the third world where many people don't already have cell phones.

SCPL changes the cell-phone game in even basic phone performance, Garriques says. The MOTOFONE is super-thin, features two antennas for superior reception, "enhanced audio" that's super-loud and super-clear (think Nextel), and a screen which you can see "in unbelievably bright sunlight as well as no sunlight as all," according to Garriques. It'll have 450 minutes of talk time and 400 hours of standby -- you'll be able to go weeks without a charge. And it'll be really cheap.

The MOTOFONE is just the first in a long line of SCPLs which will hit every price level and every form factor, including clamshells, QWERTYs, and sliders, Garriques said. And the higher-end "SCPL Broadband" platform, to be unveiled early next year, will come to "all of our HSDPA and EVDO Rev A customers across the world" -- which means, at the very least, Sprint and Verizon.

DataViz has partnered with Sony Ericsson to provide Exchange ActiveSync connectivity for Sony Ericsson's new Symbian OS based UIQ 3.0 smartphones, both the M600 (pictured) and P990.

The Exchange ActiveSync mailbox and synchronization engine included on these new smartphones is powered by DataViz' RoadSync which provides secure, wireless and "Direct Push" synchronization of corporate e-mail, calendar, contacts and attachments from Exchange Server 2003.

Both DataViz and Sony Ericsson are official licensees of the Exchange ActiveSync protocol from Microsoft.

RoadSync simultaneously lowers IT costs by providing an easy to implement mobile e-mail strategy which eliminates the need for middleware servers and subscription fees.

Customers who purchase an M600 and P990 can register their ActiveSync client on-line with DataViz.

Just a little over a week ago Sony Ericsson announced a number of really cool new phones.

And now it looks that more Sony Ericsson phones are coming - the pictures of new Sony Ericsson Walkman Slider phone started surfacing in Eastern Europe.

Given that the live phone already surfaced at retailer shop, I think it should be safe to expect the official launch pretty soon.

And there was one other SE phone missing from the last announcement - 5 megapixel Sony Ericsson K850i Cybershot that we have been waiting for a few months now.

More good news from Nokia - the Finnish phone manufacturer has unveiled a couple of new handsets in the form of the Nokia 5200 and Nokia 3250 XpressMusic. The Nokia 5200 will feature the same slider design which is found on the higher-end Nokia 5300, offering an amalgamation of music and messaging functions which target the youth market. The Nokia 3250 XpressMusic cellphone updates the best-selling Nokia 3250 by retaining the signature twist design, although music capacity has been bumped up by 100%. The Nokia 5200 and Nokia 3250 XpressMusic will retail for 200 Euros and 400 Euros respectively.

Nokia N95

Finally in an effort to unite its online offerings under a single brand, Nokia has also said its Nokia Maps service will also be pulled under the Ovi brand.

So all sounds very tempting but what about compatible handsets? According to the Finns, the N73, N81, N81 8GB, N93, N93i, N95 and N95 8GB will all work with Ovi when it launches in November. But wait, aren't some of these models new?

Yup, that's right my chums. Nokia has today rolled out the N81, N81 8GB (top) and N95 8GB (above). The former are a pair of sliders with HSDPA, integrated 802.11b/g wireless, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and (get ready to cheer) a 3.5mm headphone jack. The standard N81 has a microSD expansion slot while the latter has 8GB of built in storage but, surprisingly, no expansion slot.

As for the N95 8GB, it - as the name suggests - throws 8GB of storage inside the N95. Not only that however, it also increases the screen size slightly from 2.6 inches to 2.8 inches though the QVGA resolution remains the same as do all other specs.

All three models, like the Ovi service itself, will become available in Q4. Finntastic.

Nokia N81

Today Nokia has announced the brand is back - but thankfully as part of a software platform rather than a dedicated device.

Incorporated inside Nokia's new Internet services brand ‘Ovi' ('Door' in Finnish - I know because the press release told me), it will give budding mobile gamers the chance to download games onto their handsets for between six and eight euros a pop. Free demos of all games will also be available to provide a try-before-you-buy experience. Nokia hasn't detailed any specific titles for N-Gage as of yet, but expect some golden oldies as well as a raft of newbies.

Further fleshing out Ovi is access to the Nokia Music Store which is scheduled to go live later this year. 192kbps bitrate tracks will be sold in WMA format and can be downloaded either from a compatible handset or direct for a PC. A catalogue of 'millions' is claimed to be available from day one with prices for individual songs set at one euro and albums going for 10 euros.

The immediately striking thing about the XDA Exec is its size: it is larger than usual because it incorporates a (relatively) big keyboard inside a clamshell design. Just like a Tablet PC you can swivel the screen and lay it flat, facing outermost, if you don't want to use the keyboard.

When you rotate the 640 x 480 pixel, 3.6 diagonal inch screen it automatically reorients from landscape format to portrait, though you can easily change the orientation manually using an icon on the Today screen.

This is a very flexible design, but it does make for quite a lot of bulk to carry around in your pocket; overall the XDA Exec weighs 285g. And it is worth noting that the keyboard, while considerably larger than any other PDA keyboard we've seen in recent years, is not large enough for touch-typing.

This is the first PDA from O2 to support 3G communications, and a camera next to the screen lets you make video calls, while a second camera on the back will shoot stills at up to 1,280 x 960 pixels and capture video.

Both Bluetooth and 802.11b are included, so you can hop onto wireless networks when in range and use a Bluetooth headset for voice calls. A wireless headset is probably the best option for voice communications, in fact, the others being the supplied wired headset and holding the hardware to your ear - a job for which it is rather too bulky.

The XDA Exec runs Windows Mobile 5, an updated version of Microsoft's handheld operating system. Many of the changes from the previous version are under the hood, with the general look and feel remaining familiar. Notable changes include some enhancements to the built-in software Word Mobile and Excel Mobile (renamed from Pocket Word and Pocket Excel), the introduction of a PowerPoint viewer and two new soft-menu buttons on the touch-sensitive screen whose roles change depending on what application you are using at the time.

Our review unit was not quite the final model, and we didn't have the full memory quota installed, but it looks as though the XDA Exec will be up there with the most memory-rich PDAs available as the final specification is for 128MB of flash memory and 64MB of RAM, with an SD card slot so you can expand on what's available if necessary.

This device could nail the coffin shut for die hard VGA Pocket PC users! With a rumored 3G radio, 802.11b/g, a 2 megapixel camera, surround sound, TV out, and an XScale PXA270 crankin’ out 520MHz, and, (take a deep breath and sit down for this) a 3.6 VGA screen! NVIDIA GoForce 5500 will do the honors powering the VGA screen. I’m not sure the size of the person holding the Xda Flame in the picture but it looks to be quite a handful.

O2 - XDA II review

One of the dilemmas for anyone looking to buy a PDA these days is whether to go for something that is GSM / GPRS connected. If you decide you do want the kind of device which can act as your phone as well as your PDA, then the next thing to do is decide whether you want something that leans more towards the phone or the PDA in terms of screen size, features and functionality.

For the PDA side of things, the tri-band XDA II from O2 would be a very compelling choice. Priced at £349 including the cost of a contract (it isn't available on pay-as-you-go yet), you get a lot of value for your money in comparison with other hardware sharing similar features.

The design is pretty functional in terms of looks, and its silver casing isn't exactly innovative, but with this second version of the XDA, O2 has managed to bury the antenna within the main body of the hardware, making it slightly tall for a PDA, but not unwieldy.

There is a digital stills and movie camera built into the back of the XDA II, which captures still images at 640 x 480, 320 x 240 and 160 x 160 pixels, and video at 176 x 144 and 128 x 96 pixels. Using the camera is easy thanks to a dedicated button on the side of the casing, which both starts the software, turning the whole screen into a viewfinder, and captures images.

The internal specifications are top-notch. The processor, Intel's PXA 263, runs at 400MHz, and there is 128MB of RAM available, with a further 14MB of flash memory for backing up data that absolutely must survive battery failure. An SD card slot lets you add even more memory.

The battery is removable so a spare can be swapped in if needed and there is space for charging a spare in the cradle. O2 says the supplied battery is good for 15 hours of PDA type functionality, or 3 hours 30 minutes talk-time / 150 hours on standby. When we looped MP3s through it we got 4 hours 30 minutes of life - far from O2's claims, but enough, probably, to get you through a working day.

Irritatingly, the docking cradle holds the hardware at a rather more upright angle than usual, which means that to properly see the screen it has to be further away from you on the desk.

The standard Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Phone Edition applications are all here, and O2 augments them with a few of its own located in the ROM of the device, so you don't need to reinstall them if the power does fail you. Most notable among the suite provided is ClearVue PDF reader and ClearVue PPT for reading PowerPoint documents, plus PhotoContacts for attaching images to your contacts, and a backup tool.

There is also the O2 Active Today Screen, which provides one or two tap access to a range of Internet-based and other features, and there is an e-mail client which can be used to help you stay in touch while you are out and about. Bluetooth is present too, so thankfully you can use a headset if you'd rather not hold a PDA to your ear to make calls, Of course you can also use O2's hands-free kit for this purpose.

In this article I review one item that I could definitely not live without: my Motorola V3 RAZR cellular phone. This clamshell-style phone is one of the thinnest, sleekest, and toughest phones on the market, and comes equipped with a VGA camera with 4X digital zoom, a 176 x 200 pixel internal color screen display, Java 2.0, 750 mAh lithium ion battery, quad-band GSM/GPRS, and Bluetooth and Internet capability. Best of all, the phone weighs 3.35 ounces, has the dimensions of a standard credit card, and is under 14 mm in thickness.

The first thing that you notice about the RAZR V3 is its tough, metallic exterior. That exterior is actually made of anodized aluminum, as opposed to plastic. This protects the phone during falls and other insults, although I wouldn't recommend beating it up too much, as its internal electronics are rather delicate. I have been very happy with the durability and resistance of the phone's exterior, as its hard (and mostly waterproof) outer shell actually protected my phone's delicate innards during an actual dive into a toilet bowl! Luckily, I didn't flush...

A small color screen on the phone's clamshell front registers the name and number of the incoming call, and alerts you of missed calls or text messages by displaying a banner (as well as providing a "beep" every 5 minutes). Otherwise, it displays the current time (though, on a sunny day, it is difficult to see the actual display). Upon opening the phone, you notice its distinctive keyboard, which is etched in metal and contains a blue backlight to light up the numbers and symbols. This is ideal in terms of seeing the keys, and also eliminates the problem of having the numbers/letters eventually rub off.

Seems like BenQ are still trying very hard to leave a mark on the cellphone industry and their latest attempt comes in the shape of this sort-of impressive T60 Slim Cell Phone. Needless to say, the USP of the phone is its slim body, which at just 8.9mm thick, is more like close to the fresh-faced teenaged supermodel of the fashion world. What we like about the phone, apart from its apparent good looks is the fact that unlike most high-tech phones, it keeps things simple yet interesting for its potential fashion-savvy target consumer with its 3.2 MP camera, and other entertainment essentials like MP3 player and FM radio. It does loose out on memory though, it offers only 24MB internal memory though its microSD slot does offer some redemption. And connectivity isn’t too great either with the not-so-impressive Bluetooth 1.1 with A2DP, AVRCP and USB 1.2. A 2.2-inch display with 320×240 and 262K color looks good and the battery life also impresses with up to 200 hours in standby and up to 3 hours of talk time.

I’ve had my iPhone for 2 weeks or so, and while it’s a really nice device, if I were not a mobile-media guy I would strongly suggest a BlackBerry Curve to you or even a Pearl if you aren’t a super-mobile-computer person (SMS, Email, Browsing, etc).

If you are a technical person and you like it when devices act the way you want them to, and you expect a lot of access and functionality to your device, BlackBerry all the way. I’m tending to be more of a “hands off” type of guy, but even I think the iPhone is locked down a bit too much. However, if you want mobile media (like watching TV shows during a bus ride, etc.) or are a design whore to a fault, you’ll really like the iPhone.

Ever wish you could grab a new Sony Ericsson handset with a full QWERT keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera, aGPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HSDPA/HSUPA, all running atop a beautifully skinned version of Windows Mobile 6? Turns out today might be your lucky day. SE has just unleashed the XPERIA X1 at the Mobile World Congress, and from the looks of things, this is going to be one hell of a competitor. The handset sports a slide out / slide up keypad that looks like a cross between a Sidekick and an HTC Tilt, with navigation accomplished by way of a 4-way dpad and an optical joystick. The handset also sports a custom "panel interface" that appears to provide TouchFLO-like icon-based navigation. No word on price, but we should see it launch in "select markets" by the second half of 2008. Nice!

Samsung Omnia

Samsung has released Omnia, its reply to the iPhone 3G, with loads of features as equal as the iPhone, Omnia also features a 5Mp Camera. Needless to say the phone would cost us dearly.

The phone has a 3.2″ display and have good video and audio playback capabilities. Visit http://omnia.samsungmobile.com/ for more. The pricing is not announced yet and the phone will be available in Europe in July.
